It was a perfect weekend to visit the City of Duluth...the coldest weather of the year so far with high temperatures around -10 and wind chills up to -50. Here you can see us enjoying a nice stroll on the shore of Lake Superior. We brought a picnic lunch and a frisbee but found that the beach was too crowded.
We stayed at a very cheesy and overpriced motel, but this view from the window was worth the price. Despite how cold it is, Lake Superior doesn't freeze entirely so there is all sorts of steam and fog that rises off of it. In fact, the lake usually keeps Duluth a bit warmer than the rest of the region in the winter because it acts as a giant radiator. In the summer, the cool breezes keep it 15 degrees cooler than farther inland.
The shorefront is dominated by old, revived mill and factory buildings like this one. Fitgers is a popular, high-class hotel and brewery complex. They didn't like the look of us, so we stayed across the street.
Another picture from our walk on the shore. The ice was sharp on our undercarraiges when we sat down for the picnic. Check out the brine ice that built up on this old dilapidated pier.

The real reason for the weekend in Duluth was a snowshoe race that Ian wanted to do. It was so cold that he had heart palpitations during the race because the air going in was such a shock to the system. All of the finishers had crazy frost build-ups on them. Here it looks like he has a white hat on, but it's green. Best part of the event was the keg and pizza at the hotel afterward.
